Introduction to Pediatric Palliative Care  

Making Every Moment Count: The focus of the film is on the emotional and psychological aspects of pediatric palliative care. This video profiles five children with life threatening illness, and the families and health professionals who support them and addresses the complex issues surrounding end-of-life care for these children. The film shows that, despite popular belief, children can talk about end-of-life issues if given proper support, and that doing so can help both them and their families cope with the realities of their situation. 

Lion in the House: Documentary that follows the stories of five exceptional children and their families as they battle pediatric cancer. From the trauma of diagnosis to the physical toll of treatment, this series documents the stresses that can tear a family apart as well as the courage of children facing the possibility of death with honesty, dignity and humor. As the film compresses six years into one narrative, it puts viewers in the shoes of parents, physicians, nurses, siblings, grandparents and social workers who struggle to defeat an indiscriminate and predatory disease.

Difficult Conversations in Pediatric Palliative Care: presents a series of scenarios involving end-of-life conversations between practitioners and children/families. This three-part video introduces an innovative educational approach for developing clinicians' communication and relational skills.

IPPC (The Initiative for Pediatric Palliative Care) Video Series: The IPPC videotape series offers rich, evocative portrayals of children, families, and professional caregivers in a range of palliative care contexts, and is a central part of the IPPC curriculum. These six award-winning videos were created for use in the structured learning activities described in the facilitator's guides, but also are being used independently by educators in a range of settings.

The six videos are:

  • What Matters to Families: Presents the stories of three families describing their experiences with health care professionals and the health care system as they negotiate the difficult road through their child's life-threatening illness.

  • There's Gotta Be Another Way: Addressing Parents' Fears About Opioid Analgesia: A dramatization of a conversation between health care professionals and parents of an 8-year-old patient. Parents raise and professionals respond to common fears and concerns regarding opioid pain medications.
  • I Need It to Make Sense: Reflections on Caring for Dying Children and Their Families: Health care professionals from a variety of disciplines discuss the emotional and spiritual impact of working in pediatric palliative care.

Perinatal/Neonatal  

Capturing a Short Life: A documentary about families dealing with infant loss. It portrays the emotional, medical, and ethical choices that parents are often faced with when told that their baby is incompatible with life. This film follows the stories of four families as they live through, and detail their baby's lives.

Communication  

Difficult Conversations in Pediatric Palliative Care: A series of scenarios involving end-of-life conversations between practitioners and children/families. Scene used in this module is Scene #III: “Bedside Conversation: Sandy Richards”. 

Ethical Issues in Pediatric Palliative Care  

Difficult Conversations in Pediatric Palliative Care: A series of scenarios involving end-of-life conversations between practitioners and children/families. Scene used in this module is Scene #II: “Conversation 2: The O’Briens”. 

Difficult Decisions in Pediatric Care: Just Because We Can, Should We? Explores the ethical dilemma parents face when told that their child “needs” a particular treatment, surgery or intervention, and palliative care options are not offered. The film explores the benefits of treatment consistent with the individual lifestyle and values of the patient and family.

If the World Was a Village of 100 People: This is a 4 ½ minute depiction of this complex world if the world had 100 people. See a shorter 2010 version.  

Pain  

Elliot Krane: The Mystery of Chronic Pain: We think of pain as a symptom, but there are cases where the nervous system develops feedback loops and pain becomes a terrifying disease in itself. Starting with the story of a girl whose sprained wrist turned into a nightmare, Elliot Krane talks about the complex mystery of chronic pain, and reviews the facts we're just learning about how it works and how to treat it.  

Care at the Time of Death  

She Needs Her Daddy for This Part: A distraught single father with a terminally ill daughter won't admit that his little girl is dying. He finally goes to his daughter's bedside to be there for her last moments. See a Grey’s Anatomy clip.

Loss, Grief, Bereavement  

Choosing Thomas: Facing death can be hardest for a family expecting new life. Follow T.K. and Deidrea Lauxs journey after they learn that their unborn son has a genetic disorder called Trisomy 13. They hope the intimate look helps others understand and cope with infant loss.
