Taking Care explores humanity’s long-standing efforts to look after one another—celebrating our greatest triumphs in caregiving while acknowledging the moments we’ve fallen short. Both inspiring and thought-provoking, it serves as a rallying cry for change and as a heartfelt tribute to nurses past, present, and future.

This compelling cultural history of nursing uncovers:

  • A Buried Legacy of Care: Journey from prehistoric communities to the battlegrounds of war and epidemic to uncover the often-overlooked story of the caregivers who have always played a crucial role in human survival.
  • Healthcare Through the Lens of Justice: A clear-eyed examination of how misogyny and racism have shaped—and hindered—the nursing profession, and how nurses are working to build a more equitable system.
  • The Power of Patient Advocacy: Vivid portraits of nurses across time who stand at the crossroads of medicine and community, influencing the world through quiet, steadfast acts of care.
  • A Demand for Transformation: More than a historical account, this book offers a bold and uplifting argument for elevating the nursing profession and reimagining the future of care for all.
