Nurse Education, Practice, Quality and Retention (NEPQR) Simulation Education Training (SET) Program

Applications are currently being accepted through the NEPQR program from schools seeking funding to increase training opportunities for nursing students through simulation-based technology. The program aims to increase the number and capacity of nursing students to address the healthcare needs and improve patient outcomes of rural and/or medically underserved populations. The application deadline is July 3. Learn more here.

Advance Scholarship in DEI: Apply for an AACN Faculty Scholar Grant
Faculty Scholars Grant Program
 
The Foundation for Academic Nursing, the philanthropic arm of AACN, is seeking applications for AACN's Faculty Scholars Grant Program. This program provides support to nurse educators leading innovative efforts to redesign teaching and learning at AACN member schools.
 
For this grant cycle, AACN is specifically inviting applications focused on advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Given the legislative threats impacting DEI and the urgent need to drive health equity, AACN has prioritized scholarship in this area. Innovation-focused applications will be sought next year. 
 
Two $25,000 awards will be presented to support faculty projects focused on promoting DEI in restricted states, achieving health equity, enhancing diversity among nurse faculty and students, assessing the impact of workforce diversity on patient outcomes, or identifying barriers to preparing a diverse nursing workforce. Apply to TIGER: Empowering Doctoral Nurses in Genomics

If you are a doctoral nurse looking to enhance your knowledge and skills in genetic and genomic content, consider applying to the Translation and Integration of Genomics is Essentials to Doctoral Nursing (TIGER) program. This education award, supported by the National Human Genome Research Institute of the National Institutes of Health, is a flipped classroom, train-the-trainer and collaborative mentorship program for a community of genomics informed nurses. The program has two parts: a Genomics workshop held as a pre-conference in conjunction with AACN's Doctoral Education Conference in January, and monthly virtual genomic updates with nationally recognized genomic experts covering an array of topics, including population health, genomics in nursing education, genomics curriculum development, responsible research conduct, and more. By completing TIGER, you can earn up to 22.75 contact hours towards your continuing education requirements.

AACN’s Faculty Leadership Network (FLN) offers a sounding board for faculty members to ask pedagogy questions and exchange ideas with the goal of supporting the evolution of teaching and learning in nursing education.

Here are three ways the FLN can help you foster growth in your career and collaboration:
  • In-Person Networking with Colleagues and Fellow Faculty 
    One of the most valuable aspects of the FLN is the chance to connect every year in-person with colleagues at the FLN Program, a half-day pre-conference program held prior to Transform 2023. This session brings FLN members together to network, share experiences, and learn from one another in a collaborative setting. Register for this year’s program here.
     
  • Year-Round Engagement Through an Exclusive Online Community 
    As a member of the FLN, you’ll have exclusive access to an online community platform that fosters collaboration. Share insights with peers and participate in discussion groups on a range of topics.

Crisis Adverted: Bipartisan Debt Ceiling Bill Signed into Law
On June 3, President Biden signed the Fiscal Responsibility Act (H.R.3746) into law, narrowly averting a government default. This action comes following passage of H.R. 3746 in the House by a vote of 314-117 and a Senate vote of 63-36. The bipartisan Fiscal Responsibility Act suspends the debt ceiling through January 1, 2025, and imposes limits on discretionary spending over the next two fiscal years. Further, this bill includes recission of federal funding, particularly unspent COVID money, expansion of work requirements for temporary assistance programs, including Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Programs (SNAP), and ends the Student Loan Payment pause 60 days after June 30, among other items. According to the Congressional Budget Office estimate, H.R. 3746 would reduce the deficit by $1.5 trillion over the next ten years.
 
Programs vital to nursing education, practice, and research, including Title VIII Nursing Workforce Development Programs and the National Institute of Nursing Research, fall under non-defense discretionary spending, and could be impacted by the passage of this compromise. Further, recissions of COVID funding are expected at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), including at the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). Given this, conversations with our federal policymakers and the Administration remain a top priority.
