GNSA Bulletin - November 2021 Edition

Prior to enrolling at UMass Chan Medical School’s graduate nursing program (GEP to DNP track), I worked as a research coordinator doing public health research for both the Veteran’s Health Administration and Worcester communities. Hearing numerous stories from participants about maltreatment and negative experiences from their health care providers made me decide to explore both the nursing and nurse practitioner professions. I wanted to make a difference in the lives of my patients and provide them with the healthcare experience that they deserved. While looking into UMass’s program, I noticed that their lab spaces had state-of-the-art equipment and simulations, which allowed students to be able to practice nursing skills in a safe environment without the risk of harming patients. This program allows students to be able to complete RN licensure within a year and progress into their desired Nurse Practitioner track, eventually obtaining a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree.

Being a student at UMass Chan Medical School’s graduate nursing program thus far has been an incredible learning experience. The faculty and staff have been compassionate and caring about student success and make one feel like they are not “just a number.” My peers are also incredibly supportive, and our camaraderie makes this accelerated program the best it can be. After I complete the program, I aspire to work as a surgical nurse practitioner and teach RN students at a local University. I hope to become more involved in nursing research to expand the nursing field using evidenced-based practice.
