In the February 24, 2020 issue of The Hill, Janice Phillips from the Rush University College of Nursing published a new article titled Support for Nursing Is Good for the Nation's Health. In this opinion piece, the author sounds the alarm about proposed cuts to the Nursing Workforce Development programs administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration and makes the case that supporting nursing education and faculty are essential to maintaining access to high quality, affordable health care.

On February 24, the Education Commission of the States released a new report titled Community College Bachelor's Degrees: An Update on State Activity and Policy Considerations. This policy brief captures recent state policy activity pertaining to community college bachelor's degree programs, summarizes arguments for and against these policies, and offers policy considerations for states starting or expanding these programs.

UPenn Launches Amplifying Nursing Podcast

It's no secret that nurses are change makers, thought leaders, and champions of patient empowerment. The University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing recently launched Amplify Nursing, a podcast that features nurses who are leading the way in nursing science, policy, and innovation. The podcast, which showcases guests who defy stereotypes and disrupt convention, highlights the breadth and depth of nursing influence on society. Opportunities and Resources to Consider

  • The American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) will award up to 30 nursing students with the 2020 Board of Directors Student Scholarship. The APNA student scholarship program is intended to encourage students to pursue the field of psychiatric-mental health nursing and develop the next generation of leaders in the profession. Undergraduate and graduate level nursing students are invited to apply for the scholarship or be nominated by a member of their nursing school faculty. Scholarship winners are also awarded travel and lodging to attend the APNA Annual Conference as well as a one-year APNA membership with professional benefits. Application deadline is April 6. 
  • The Association for Prevention Teaching and Research (APTR) has released the revised Clinical Prevention and Population Health Curriculum Framework. This document provides a common core of knowledge for clinical health professions regarding individual and population-oriented prevention and health promotion efforts. The Framework can support interprofessional prevention education and practice. The academic and practice community are invited to view the proposed Framework and continue to share comments and feedback online.  
  • The Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research (FNINR) is accepting applications for five awards to be presented at the October 28, 2020 NightinGala. The deadline for application submissions is March 30, 2020. For information on the five awards and how to submit a nomination or to self-nominate, visit FNINR's website.  
  • The Interprofessional Student Hotspotting Learning Collaborative is an annual program that trains health profession students to work with individuals with complex medical and social needs using a patient-centered approach.  Student Hotspotting is part of the Camden Coalition of Healthcare Providers' effort to educate and provide mentorship for the next generation of healthcare professionals and is run through the National Center for Complex Health and Social Needs. AACN is a supporting partner of the Student Hotspotting program and strongly encourages schools of nursing to apply.  For more information about the program, register for an informational webinar on April 8, 2020 at 2 pm (ET). More information about the program, as well as a link to the student team application can be found here. The final application deadline is May 1, 2020.
  • NIH's Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research (OBSSR) seeks research community input by March 29 on their next strategic plan. OBSSR has released a Request for Information and IdeaScale campaign seeking input to identify important new directions for health-related behavioral and social sciences research. Visit the NIH website for more information.
