Boundary Spanning Leadership: Maximizing Collaboration within Academic Nursing

This 1.5-day pre-conference session, connected to AACN’s Deans Annual Meeting, is designed for leaders in higher education to gain high-level leadership and management skills. Chief Academic Officers (deans/directors) in academic nursing are called to lead across multiple boundaries in service of a diverse group of stakeholders. This Executive Develop Series (EDS) for Deans program will be delivered by the nationally recognized leadership development provider, Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) and apply CCL, Boundary Spanning Leadership practices.  Academic nursing leaders will surface the challenging and engage to identify themes within their own practice of leadership. Seasoned academic nursing leaders share their experiences and expertise offering tips and tools for faculty and staff engagement, how to develop your leadership team, managing and mitigating risk, and how to overcome obstacles and barriers in leadership to effectively implement your vision.

Lynn brings more than 30 years of experience in leadership positions from a variety of organizations including serving as the Director of Government and Community Affairs for the Greensboro Area Chamber of Commerce; Chief Marketing Officer of Huthwaite, a sales research and training firm outside Washington, DC. Lynn’s previous experience at the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL)® includes serving as the Group Director of Institutional Advancement with responsibility for fundraising and alumni relations; Manager of Marketing; and Senior Faculty with responsibility for designing and delivering leadership development solutions specifically for foundations, nonprofits, and population health-focused organizations, including the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Colorado Health Foundation, Kresge Foundation, Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of NC, Kate B.   • No substitutions are allowed for the Deans Annual Meeting and the EDS for Deans.
  • Your cancellation request must be received in writing and confirmed by AACN; otherwise, it cannot be honored. The following refund arrangements will then apply:
  • Cancellation requests received by March 8, 2024, will be refunded minus a $150 non-refundable administrative fee.
  • No refunds will be given after March 8, 2024 nor will refunds be given for no-shows.
  • No-show registrations with an open balance will be charged a $150 non-refundable administrative fee after the event.
  • Your cancellation request must be submitted in writing to conferences@aacnnursing.org and confirmed by AACN.

Please note: AACN will issue refunds within a 2-week time period of receipt of written cancellation notice.

Event Cancellation by AACN

AACN reserves the right to modify, postpone/reschedule or cancel this conference and any related group activity for any circumstance beyond AACN's control, including but not limited to emergency, acts of God, government regulations, disaster, strike, and non-fulfilment of minimum group requirements. If AACN cancels an event, every attempt will be made to reschedule or provide a modified virtual offering, and registration fees will be applied to the rescheduled/virtual event. If a cancelled event cannot be rescheduled, AACN will issue a full refund of the registration fee(s). Any travel, lodging, or incidental expenses incurred related to a cancelled/postponed event cannot be refunded under any circumstances as AACN resumes no responsibility for such expenses.

Friday, March 22

9:00-9:45 a.m. Welcome, Creating Connections, Agenda, and Objectives
   
9:45-11:00 a.m. Why is Boundary Spanning Leadership Important in Academic Nursing?
In this session, participants will share their thoughts and struggles around collaborating effectively within their own academic institution, especially in academic nursing. Small groups share their challenges with each other and what makes them so difficult to solve/address. The session will end with table groups sharing the key themes they identified.
   
11:20 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Understanding Leadership as a Social Process
Participants will engage in an interactive discussion of CCL’s DAC model of Leadership. Leadership is a social process that produces three critical outcomes: Direction, Alignment, and Commitment (DAC). Each participant will explore the degree to which they have achieved these outcomes in relation to the collaborative challenge the identified previously. They will walk away with a few methods for continually assessing the levels of DAC in any collaborative challenge they lead in the future.
   
12:15-1:15 p.m. Lunch (on your own)
   
1:15-2:30 p.m. Understanding Boundary Spanning Leadership
Participants will engage in an interactive exploration of CCL’s research-based Boundary Spanning Leadership Framework, which includes three strategies and six practices that can be applied to their collaborative challenges. This will include an opportunity to explore which of the five primary boundaries they are struggling to span with their individual collaborative challenge.
   
2:30-2:50 p.m. Break
   
2:50-4:00 p.m. Managing the Boundaries
Participants will apply two practices associated with Managing Boundaries to their respective challenges, selecting tactics offered that they could try in their own academic institutions.

9:00-10:15 a.m. Forging Common Ground
Participants will apply the two practices associated with Forging Common Ground to their respective challenges; and discuss at their table groups to share ideas and learnings.
   
10:15-10:35 a.m. Break
   
10:35-11:30 a.m. Discovering New Frontiers
Participants will apply the final two practices associated with Discovering New Frontiers to their respective challenges; and share ideas and learnings at their table groups.
   
11:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Lifting up Highlights from the Day
Each participant will identify action steps they are planning to take based on the work done in this 1.5-day session and we’ll hear from some people before we close the session.
