COVID-19 Update: Congressional Stimulus Package Compromise and AACN Advocate Engagement
Earlier today, Congress announced that they reached a deal on the bipartisan Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. As of press time, we are still waiting on final legislative language. As we await final text, we wanted to take this opportunity to thank our AACN Advocates for all of their efforts throughout these conversations, especially during AACN’s Virtual Advocacy Day on Monday, March 23, 2020. In fact, AACN’s Virtual Advocacy Day, where nursing deans, directors, and students emailed their Senators and Representative, resulted in over 1,000 messages being sent to Capitol Hill! Our unified voice makes all the difference!
As we continue to address this public health challenge, AACN also:
- Sent a letter to House and Senate leadership outlining key legislative priorities that we would like included in any COVID-19 package.
- Submitted testimony to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies reiterating our support for at least $278 million in funding for the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Development programs, and at least $182 million for the National Institute of Nursing Research. Given the current public health challenge we are facing, it is more important than ever to invest in the nursing workforce and in life-saving scientific research.
- AACN’s President and CEO, Dr. Deborah Trautman attended a White House briefing with President Donald J. Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force to discuss nurses’ response to COVID-19. To learn more about this briefing see AACN’s press release and remarks from the White House.
- Worked with coalition partners to reiterate our shared priorities, including the safety and health of nurses and nursing students as we combat COVID-19.
AACN will continue to monitor this legislation and take action to support the efforts of our member schools to address COVID-19. For the latest updates and new developments once the bill text is released, please follow us on Twitter at @AACNPolicy.
