Happy National Nurses Week!

AACN joined with the Nursing Community Coalition at the “Thank a Nurse Congressional Reception” last night to honor the more than four million nurses across the nation. Attendees heard from nurses across the profession and were joined by nine Members of Congress, Representatives and Senators alike, in a bipartisan fashion. Together, we expressed gratitude and celebrated nurses for all they do to advance health care and higher education every day.

Initial FY 2020 Appropriations Report Shows Support for Nursing Workforce, Research

Today, the House Appropriations Committee is marking up their Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education (LHHS-ED) FY 2020 funding bill. Released yesterday, this House LHHS-ED report and bill included the below increases:

FY 2020 appropriations graphic

  • TITLE VIII: $279.472 million, which is a $30.000 million and 12.03% increase over FY 2019 funding levels
  • NINR: $170.958 million, which is a $7.966 million and 4.89% increase over FY 2019 funding levels
  • Opioids: $25 million for the Loan Repayment Program for Substance Use Disorder Treatment Workforce
  • Student Documentation: Inclusion of language that supports verification, not redocumentation for NPs and PAs.

This is a strong initial showing for AACN’s priority programs and a true testament to our continued advocacy in these areas. This is only the first step in the process, however, and AACN will continue to monitor the appropriations process as it continues in the House and Senate.
