Congress Passes the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act
Last week, Congress passed the Dr. Lorna Breen Health Care Provider Protection Act. This bipartisan legislation would establish grants to improve mental and behavioral health and prevent burnout among healthcare providers, including nurses. The bill now heads to the President’s desk to be signed into law. AACN has long supported this effort and applauds Congress for passing this important legislation.
AACN Attends Congressional Hearings on Mental Health
Last week, AACN attended two Congressional hearings on rising mental health concerns throughout the nation, including:
- On February 15, the Senate Finance Committee held a hearing titled, Protecting Youth Mental Health: Part II - Identifying and Addressing Barriers to Care, to discuss ongoing mental health issues faced by today’s youth. Panelists emphasized that an unprecedented mental health crisis among children and adolescents is currently happening. They also stressed that more must be done to ensure the youth population can have access to mental health services without barriers to care. Recommendations included toolkits and investments in the behavioral healthcare workforce, among others. To view the hearing, click here.
- On February 17, the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations held a hearing titled, Americans in Need: Responding to the National Mental Health Crisis. Witnesses highlighted the importance of understanding the drivers of mental health issues, including how to recognize signs of suicide. Experts also stressed that increased access to health care, further education and awareness in schools, and more funding is crucial to sustaining suicide prevention efforts, especially among youth and providers.
