AACN Submits Comments to Federal Agencies on Healthcare and Education Priorities

On July 22, AACN submitted comments to the Department of Health and Human Services on initiatives to strengthen primary health care. AACN’s recommendations reiterated the need for reducing barriers and increasing access to telehealth services, ensuring delivery of quality care services, and other healthcare priorities. These requests are especially critical to rural and underserved communities and for the nursing workforce. To view AACN’s comments, click here.

On August 8, AACN submitted comments to the Department of Education on student assistance provisions, as well as the Federal Perkins Loan Program, Federal Family Education Loan Program, and William D. Ford Federal Direct Program Proposed Rule. AACN addressed various issues, including public service loan forgiveness, total and permanent disability discharges, and school closing discharges. Biden-Harris Administration Announces Student Debt Relief Plan

On August 24, the Biden-Harris Administration announced their student loan debt relief plan, which calls for forgiving up to $10,000 for college graduates with individual income of less than $125,000 or $250,000 for households annually. For Pell Grant recipients, the Department of Education will forgive up to $20,000 in student loan debt. This announcement comes after several pauses on the student loan repayment program. The current pause will be extended one final time through December 31, 2022, with payments reinstated in January 2023.
