Biden Announces Intent to Appoint First Director of Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health
On September 12, President Biden announced his intent to name Dr. Renee Wegrzyn as the first director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H). In this role Dr. Wegrzyn would lead ARPA-H as they work to advance biomedical and health research and provide innovative solutions for patients. Previously, she worked with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity, both which helped to inspire the creation of ARPA-H. AACN Attends Virtual Webinar on Preparing for the Next Pandemic
On September 15, AACN attended an Axios webinar focused on preparing for future global pandemics. This event featured conversations with Sen. Todd Young (R-IN) and Dr. Arjun Srinivason, Associate Director for Healthcare-Associated Infection Prevention Programs at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion. While the focus of this discussion was on efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance (AMR) globally, panelists also spoke to the threat of superbugs and the impact COVID-19. Dr. Srinivason detailed the threat of AMR prior to the COVID-19 outbreak and how the pandemic heightened the threat of superbugs and derailed research efforts. Sen. Young expressed his support in bipartisan solutions, including the Pioneering Antimicrobial Subscriptions to End Upsurging Resistance (PASTEUR) Act, which partners public and private sectors to aid in research and development of antibiotics. Student Policy Summit Registration Opens Next Monday
AACN’s 2023 Student Policy Summit (SPS) registration opens next Monday, September 26 at Noon (ET)! This two-day summit, to be held March 26-27, 2023, brings baccalaureate and graduate students enrolled at AACN member institutions to our nation’s capital for sessions focused on the federal policy process and nursing’s role in professional advocacy.
