GNSA Bulletin - January 2023 Edition Thursday, January 12, 2023 Emerging Leaders Alexandria Tasket, BSN, RN BSN-DNP Program University of Tennessee, Knoxville Anticipated Graduation Date: December 2023 Staff Nurse, East Tennessee Children's Hospital I chose to continue my education to be a doctorally prepared nurse practitioner because I wanted to be able to help more children. Through this program, I am gaining the skills to implement evidence-based practice to care for children at the population level and developing skills to care for a child and family on the individual level. Following graduation, I plan to earn my Evidence-Based Practice Certification (EBP-C), enroll in a nurse educator post-graduate certificate program to earn my nurse educator certification, and apply for a post-doctoral fellowship. I plan to work as a pediatric nurse practitioner as well as precepting nurse practitioner for students and serving as a community member for DNP students’ scholarly project. As a nurse practitioner I will be able to heal, protect, and advocate for children. Are you our next emerging leader? Noteworthy Publication: In the November 2022 edition of Nursing Management, Dr. Linda Paradiso from the CUNY School of Professional Studies contributed an article titled Rebuilding Trust in Just Culture. Even before RaDonda Vaught was found guilty of criminally negligent homicide, nurses were fearful of being held individually accountable for systemic errors. Leaders are now faced with repairing the loss of faith in just culture. This article provides an understanding of the erosion of just culture and interventions needed to improve trust, which include changing systems, promoting teamwork, investigating objectively, educating judiciously, and standing by your staff. Position Notice - AACN Director of Policy The American Association of Colleges of Nursing seeks a Director of Policy to lead and provide oversight for AACN’s federal policy portfolio by maximizing resources for political consumption, responding to federal agency proposed rules, and developing strategic initiatives to address public policy challenges. The Director of Policy will communicate and build relationships with executive agencies, healthcare, nursing, higher education, and other external partners. The Director is expected to collaborate with a team of employees to bridge data resources and health policy, including developing opportunities to disseminate this information to a broader audience. I hope you all had a wonderful start to the year. As we begin the Spring 2023 semester, I wanted to share a few great opportunities for you to learn more about the role of nurses in healthcare policy. As you are setting up your calendar, be sure to take note of the 2023 Student Policy Summit (SPS) on March 26-27! This event is quickly approaching, and I am excited for those who are planning to attend. The Student Policy Summit is an amazing opportunity to learn more about federal policy processes and the impact we can have as nurses to improve our healthcare systems. I attended the Student Policy Summit in 2018, and I can honestly say it changed the way I view my role as a nurse. Not only do I recognize my responsibility to provide safe and effective health care for my patients, but through the Student Policy Summit, I realized that I hold valuable experience and a perspective that is needed to guide healthcare policy development and implementation. When I returned to my university after the Summit, I shared my excitement to engage in policy with my colleagues but found that many of them felt unprepared and reluctant to participate in any advocacy efforts. If you feel this way, you are not alone! I would encourage you to take a step and register for the Student Policy Summit. This can be a good introduction to health care policy while allowing you the opportunity to hear the latest topics in federal policy discussions and develop as a healthcare advocate. After the Student Policy Summit, I was also excited to pursue other opportunities including participating as a GNSA Advocacy Leader. Over the last 3 years, I have had the opportunity to engage in quarterly conference calls to receive updates on current policy issues and participate in discussions regarding the needs of my nursing colleagues across the nation. Not only do I appreciate hearing from my nursing colleagues and growing as an advocate alongside them, but I also appreciate the opportunity to stay engaged, even with a busy schedule. Like many of you, I wear many hats, including being a full-time student and a practicing nurse. I also value spending quality time with my family and friends. The Student Policy Summit and GNSA Advocacy Leader are examples of manageable ways that I have stayed up to date on current healthcare policy issues and continued to grow in advocacy. In return, the recipient must work for two years in a critical shortage facility or an eligible nursing school.
