Throughout my education and career trajectory, I sought opportunities to learn different aspects of the healthcare field, which shaped my career goals and have brought me to where I am today. My first step towards becoming a DNP-FNP was during my time as a float pool CNA. Not only did this expose me to varying specialties, but it also stretched my interactions across patients of various ages, diagnoses, and personalities. This led to my desire to become a FNP because I would be able to diagnose and treat patients across a lifespan. While in nursing school, I enjoyed diving into patient care and research and understanding the connection between evidence, safe patient care, and practice. I knew I wanted to develop this skill further and this reaffirmed my decision of pursuing a DNP-FNP.

I chose to enroll at the University of Michigan because of the interdisciplinary education, close interactions with mentors, and global view to become an expert in advanced nursing practice. I represent the school of nursing as a co-chair for the student advisory committee at the University of Michigan where I share my experiences on interprofessional education (IPE) with the faculty, deans, and health science schools. I provide my perspective while working with professors across multiple disciplines, which gives me confidence to pursue a leadership role in academia. Through my role as the secretary of the Michigan Council of Nurse Practitioners (MCNP), I am able to promote education, advocate, and engage with others. Through MCNP, I partnered with nurse practitioners to raise awareness about improvement opportunities such as full practice authority for nurse practitioners. This allowed me to build a network with other nurse leaders across Michigan, which I will continue to develop to become a prominent healthcare leader.

Academia is an essential component to give back to the nursing community. Through communication and relationship building, knowledge of the healthcare environment, leadership, and professionalism, I wish to pursue a role as chief nursing executive. As a future professor, I want to support students across the state with opportunities to receive mentorship to become nursing leaders. Through my IPE experience and leadership, I hope to inspire, influence, and motivate healthcare professionals as nursing leaders to make an impact in the community. Knowing that I will be supporting and educating nursing students in tandem with clinical practice gives me confidence to become a nurse leader.

Noteworthy Publication:

In the September 1, 2022 issue of Journal of Nursing Education, Dr. Vernell DeWitty, AACN's Senior Consultant for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and Dr. Danielle McCamey, Founder and President of DNPs of Color and a speaker at the 2022 GNSA Conference, published an editorial titled - Mentorship and Sponsorship - Viable Strategies for Increasing Nursing School Faculty. Though recruiting and developing faculty from diverse backgrounds is a priority, achieving this goal remains elusive for many schools. The authors outline how experienced nurse educators can address this issue by serving as mentors needed to retain faculty of color and as sponsors to elevate the career trajectory of future nurse leaders.

It's Autumn! Start Planning for Success!

Regardless of where you are in your academic journey, it is always a good idea to start planning for success. Proper (and effective) planning means that not only is there a process in place to ensure you meet your goals, but it can also serve as a means to resolve any issues that may compromise your success. Here are nine tips to help you succeed:

  1. Taking your big goals and breaking them down into smaller goals is an important step when you are planning to succeed! Have you heard of the expression, 'the best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time?' It sounds a bit weird, but it is true. Breaking down your goals into manageable pieces allows you to focus on one task at a time and avoid feeling overwhelmed.
  2. Eliminating distractions like social media and hanging out with friends is a great way to achieve success, because it allows you to concentrate on goals and generate concrete plans for achieving them. If you're always distracted by unrelated tasks, then you won't have any time or energy left to focus on your goals.
  3. Networking with the right people can open up opportunities that you never would have had otherwise. It can help you find a job, get your business off the ground, or just get advice on a tough decision.
  4. Seeing failure as a stepping-stone can separate you from those who see failure as an end in itself. When you think this way, you stop being afraid of making mistakes and start learning from them.
  5. Developing a growth mindset is important because it means you believe that your intelligence and abilities can be developed over time with effort.
  6. Asking for help when needed makes the journey that much easier. So don't be afraid to ask for help. It could be the difference between success and failure.
  7. Making adjustments and being consistent will make the goal easier or more attainable. It is normal to change your original plans and make necessary adjustments. Also, you are more likely to reach your goals if you stay consistent with your efforts, whether that means going to the gym every day or working out for a certain amount of time each week.
  8. Checking in on your progress prevents you from becoming discouraged enough to stop trying altogether and just go back to your old habits.
  9. Celebrating your wins can help you to stay motivated and keep working towards your goal. And who knows, you might even surprise yourself and reach your goal sooner than you thought possible.
