GNSA Bulletin - November 2022 Edition Thursday, November 3, 2022 Emerging Leaders Lauren Muñoz, PhD, RN, FNP-BC Postdoctoral Associate, The George Washington University Anticipated Completion Date: August 2024 Completed PhD Program in August 2022 at University of Tennessee, Knoxville I pursued my PhD because I wanted to influence change in ways that my BSN and MSN didn't afford me. I knew I needed the research, policy advocacy, and leadership skills that a PhD program would provide to make high-level impact on the nursing profession. I chose the University of Tennessee, Knoxville's program because I received my BSN and MSN there and was impressed with the caliber of their faculty and the support they provide students. And I was not disappointed. My PhD program, while challenging, was a transformative experience as I worked closely with nurse scientists, underwent major knowledge expansion, and conducted my own research with the help of a stellar dissertation committee. A few months ago, I started a postdoctoral position with the Fitzhugh Mullan Institute for Health Workforce Equity at The George Washington University. My team is the Technical Assistance Center for 44 HRSA grantees who are employing interventions to address burnout in the health and public safety workforces. The work is busy but incredibly meaningful. I'm having a blast! Are you our next emerging leader? Noteworthy Publication: In the November-December 2022 Journal of Professional Nursing, Dr. Susan O’Hara from The Ohio State University and colleagues published an article on Building and Sustaining a Culture of Innovation in Nursing Academics, Research, Policy, and Practice: Outcomes of the National Innovation Summit. To bring attention to the need for innovation at all levels of nursing and health care, experts from The Ohio State University gathered national nursing leaders to identify barriers to innovation in health care along with solutions. The article identifies gaps/opportunities and potential solutions to advancing innovation in schools of nursing, research settings, policy circles, and the practice arena. Join the GNSA! The GNSA is 10! Celebrating a Decade of Developing Future Nursing Leaders In October 2012, AACN officially launched the Graduate Nursing Student Academy (GNSA). Focused on providing resources and professional development opportunities to graduate students at AACN member institutions, the GNSA has enjoyed seeing thousands of students engage through various activities, which have propelled their nursing careers to new heights. Currently nearing a membership number close to 10,000, we want to thank the many volunteers who have served as GNSA Leadership Council members, Liaisons, Advocacy Leaders, and featured emerging leaders. Members of the GNSA truly are the next generation of nursing leaders and have graduated into faculty, administration, research, practice, and other leadership positions. As we look ahead to the next ten years, we continue to seek your feedback to ensure that the services and resources are meeting your needs. The GNSA started with 10 members on the Leadership Council, all of whom helped shape the vision and mission of the GNSA that now holds an annual conference for graduate nursing students, offers new and recurring scholarships, webinars, and so much more. Not to mention, all of the great career fairs that AACN holds. In fact, the next AACN GNSA Career Fair is coming up on November 16 from 11:00 – 4:00 pm ET. Since November is the month of giving and thanks, I’d like to reflect on my own journey as a Leadership Council member on the GNSA. I am forever thankful for the support this organization has had on my own career, from the moment I started on the second Leadership Council as an MSN student, then as a PhD student, and finally as a post-doctoral research fellow. All the while, I have learned a tremendous amount about clinical practice as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), nurse researcher conducting studies on mental health and aging, and becoming a nurse leader. The opportunities the GNSA allows for is something I hope you will take part in so that your career will also be influenced in such a positive way, as mine has. Even more recently, I had the fantastic opportunity of collaborating with another graduate nurse, Shazia Mitha, MSN, AG-ACNP-BC, RN, in the GNSA Digital Innovators Program for 2021-2022. In collaboration with Apple, the GNSA works to help educate us -- graduate nurses -- in nursing education strategies so we can continue moving the discipline of nursing forward. Shazia and I both learned so much in terms of how we can bring innovation to the classroom and clinical environment via different technologies to make us better nurses for our patients and students. The NIDA Blending Initiative: Moving Science from Research to Practice provides up to two $10,000 grant awards for project proposals submitted by a student from an AACN member school. This funding will be awarded to projects that contribute to a student’s knowledge of substance use disorders (SUD) and advances research, dissemination, and adoption of evidence-based SUD treatment.
