GNSA Bulletin - December 2022 Edition Wednesday, December 7, 2022 Emerging Leaders Tresne McCarty, BSN, RN MSN Program Millikin University Anticipated Graduation Date: December 2023 ICU Nurse, St. Mary's Hospital I enrolled in Millikin's nurse educator program because I wanted to attend a school in my hometown. Millikin University also focuses on diversity and inclusion, so I felt very comfortable speaking with the advisors and faculty before making my decision. So far, my experience has been wonderful. My professors are very knowledgeable, understanding, and helpful. They understand I am a full-time nurse and have a family, and they have made my academic journey stress free. I enjoy the curriculum because it is tailored to help me become the best educator possible. After completion of my degree, I plan to teach in various capacities. I am interested in teaching at the baccalaureate level as well as tutoring both in-person and online. Are you our next emerging leader? Noteworthy Publication: In the November 2022 issue of The American Nurse, Dr. Rose O. Sherman from Case Western Reserve University and Dr. Tanya M. Cohn from Simmons University published an article on Rebuilding Teamwork after a Turbulent Time. The authors discuss the important roles that nurse leaders have in building trust and ensuring psychological safety when creating high-functioning teams. Practical strategies are given that may be implemented across work environments, including how to avoid team dysfunction, confronting bullying and incivility, and coaching teams to promote well-being. Position Notice - AACN Director of Policy The American Association of Colleges of Nursing seeks a Director of Policy to lead and provide oversight for AACN’s federal policy portfolio by maximizing resources for political consumption, responding to federal agency proposed rules, and developing strategic initiatives to address public policy challenges. The Director of Policy will communicate and build relationships with executive agencies, healthcare, nursing, higher education, and other external partners. The Director is expected to collaborate with a team of employees to bridge data resources and health policy, including developing opportunities to disseminate this information to a broader audience. Preparing for the New Year As a current PhD student with work, school, and grant commitments, I like to use the end of the year to recharge. Part of my recharge includes coming up with a game plan to help me tackle all of the coming activities and responsibilities in the new year. Here are 5 New Year’s resolutions for nursing students I would like to share with you: Improve Your Study Habits: If you stressed yourself out this year by procrastinating on projects and put off studying until the last minute, plan to do better in the future. Consider joining or even starting a study group. The accountability and support you can gain from your peers are invaluable. Also, carve out a set time to review your notes so you don’t have to cram for an exam. Studying in smaller bursts can help boost retention and comprehension. And, if you’re struggling with a section or concept, don’t be shy about seeking help. Prepare Your Resume and Cover Letter: If you will be graduating next year, get ready to enter the job market by updating your resume to reflect your current skill set and education. You can also start writing a cover letter to include when you apply for jobs online. If you need help, be sure to contact your campus’s career services department for tips. Find a Mentor: A good mentor will help you navigate the next steps of your career and provide advice so you can avoid unnecessary mistakes. Your mentor could be a favorite instructor, a student who is ahead of you in the program, or someone you met during your student nursing clinical experiences. You might even consider becoming a mentor yourself and mentoring a new student. When you give back, you also receive by expanding your network and seeing the industry from a fresh perspective. Grow Your Network: Set up your LinkedIn profile and start networking. Connect with your instructors, fellow students, and the people you meet, while you gain experience in your clinicals. And as you’re building your network, you can also ask for letters of recommendation from your teachers and mentors, as well as ask for permission from people you may want to use as references. Work Smarter: Make the most of every learning experience. Even if you are in a situation that may not be the perfect fit, make a point to learn processes and procedures that can help you in the future. WEBINARS Professional Communication through the Emotional and Social Intelligence Lens December 8, 2:00 pm ET Positive communication skills are a key component of personal and professional resilience, team performance, and patient outcomes. Yet these skills are not explicitly taught to healthcare professionals, they are often assumed to be present. Research has shown that developing communication skills through an emotional and social intelligence lens benefits all. OPPORTUNITY ALERTS Uniform Advantage/GNSA Scholarship Congratulations to Hellen Kato, a DNP student at the University of Saint Joseph, who was selected as the September 2022 winner of the Uniform Advantage/GNSA Scholarship. Uniform Advantage has been a partner with AACN since 2020 and has recognized the need to support graduate nursing students in their educational journey. Since 2020, 6 scholarships have been awarded in the amount of $15,000. Scholarship applicants highlight their passion and impact on the nation's health and health care through a brief essay.
