GNSA Bulletin - August 2022 Edition Thursday, August 11, 2022 Emerging Leaders Kimia Robinson, BSN, RN DNP Program Arizona State University Graduate Nurse Organization President GNSA Leadership Council Member Anticipated Graduation Date: May 2023 Seeking an advanced nursing degree was always a career goal that I knew I wanted to accomplish. Even before beginning my undergraduate nursing program, becoming a Nurse Practitioner was always in the back of my mind as a prominent step to culminate my educational journey. In working as a bedside nurse in a variety of acute care settings, I saw the detrimental effects of underserved and marginalized populations not having adequate and equitable access to healthcare resources. It became more apparent to me that many of the problems, issues, and gaps within today's healthcare system are heavily influenced by a dire need to strengthen and transform primary and preventative care settings. It takes the expertise, skills, and advocacy of advanced practice nurses and healthcare leaders for transformative changes to take place, and I knew that I was ready to help make a bigger impact on the lives of those I serve. My passion for helping vulnerable communities, combined with Arizona State University's dedication to provide innovative, inclusive, and community-based education, is what inspired me to finally take the leap to enroll in Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation's graduate program. Being a part-time graduate student has allotted me an opportunity to continue to work in a clinical setting to strengthen my skill set, professionally network for future career prospects, and maintain a healthier work/life balance. However, what has truly made my program experience so wonderful is my time serving as the Vice President, and now the President of the Graduate Nurses Organization. Taking on these leadership roles not only helped me feel more deeply engaged and connected with the students and the Edson College community, but it has provided me with some amazing educational and professional opportunities that I would have never imagined when I first enrolled in the program. I plan to continue to participate in leadership roles both within the college and the local Phoenix community, in hopes of being a changemaker in health care, and help create equitable, sustainable, evidence-based strategies to promote improved health outcomes for populations in need. Upon completion of the program, I plan to dedicate my practice to caring for vulnerable populations by providing care at either an outpatient cardiology office or a primary care clinic in South Phoenix. In addition, I plan to continue my work on the Blue Zones Active Greater South Phoenix Initiative as well as my collaborations with local non-profit organizations. I plan to focus on health policy and advocacy as it relates to food insecurity and food systems. Are you our next emerging leader? Noteworthy Publication: In the June 2022 issues of the American Journal of Nursing, the author Nicole Fauteux explores the challenges and facilitators connected with Finding Clinical Placements for NP Students. Topics in this piece include paying for preceptors, non-financial incentives, improving the placement process, and strengthening academic-practice partnerships. Click here to complete the online application. 2022 GNSA Conference Highlights It’s Conference Season! The GNSA just finished its annual student conference last Friday. The event included over 120 students from around the country who came together to share their research, network with like-minded colleagues and nursing leaders, and learn about the various resources that AACN offers. Over 20 students submitted abstracts that were featured during a Thursday evening welcome reception. The GNSA offers a nurturing platform for students to share their work in a collaborative environment. Conference sessions focused on professional development, advanced nursing roles, leadership development, political advocacy, mentoring, nursing innovation, and personal brand development. The conference sessions provided attendees with the tools to help excel in their graduate program and propel their nursing career to new heights. Deadline Approaching - PhD-DNP Collaboration Excellence Award Are you currently in a PhD or DNP program and collaborating with a student in another program? If so, consider submitting an application for the GNSA PhD-DNP Collaboration Excellence Award. The award recognizes productive joint efforts and highlights the outstanding work underway to advance the nursing profession through an innovative and synergistic approach to translating research into practice and generating new knowledge. Winners are featured in the GNSA Bulletin and other AACN publications and receive a $2,000 award. The doctoral student team will be invited to attend AACN's Doctoral Education Conference in San Diego, CA to receive the award. The application deadline is August 26, 2022. Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) Calls for Comments CCNE has issued two calls for comments, one for accreditation reviews for baccalaureate and gradaute nursing programs scheduled for Fall 2022 and the other for entry-to-practice nurse residency programs. Through this process, program constituents are able to submit third-party comments concerning a program's qualification for accreditation.
