We are pleased to share an exciting resource for all faculty in Schools of Nursing! The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) is published a special issue of the Journal of Hospice and Palliative Nursing dedicated to the AACN Essentials sphere of hospice/palliative/supportive care. The December 2025 issue includes 10 articles written by nursing faculty sharing their efforts to implement this Essentials sphere into their curriculum, in undergraduate and graduate programs. Many resources are provided to support faculty.  HPNA is providing FREE ACCESS to this issue from November 10, 2025 to February 5, 2026 for all nursing school faculty so that they can benefit from the experience of their colleagues and advance this aspect of the Essentials. The December 2025 issue can be accessed at www.jhpn.com.

Improving Representation in Primary Palliative Nursing Education: Developing Videos that Reflect the Needs of Mexican American Populations
These videos addresses a critical gap in primary palliative nursing care (PPNC) education – the need for expanded representation of diverse racial and ethnic groups in educational resources. This project created 5 video vignettes that capture culturally-congruent palliative care interactions to expand the representation of Mexican American communities in educational resources. The creation of these videos was funded by Texas Organization of Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Education (TOBGNE), UT Health San Antonio School of Nursing, and the End of Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC).

  • Pain Assessment with Family Translator- Opportunities For Improvement
    Description: The purpose of this video is to show a scenario in which the nurse does not demonstrate best practice with pain assessment and caring for a patient who has a non-English language preference. There is a companion video (Pain Assessment with Interpreter- Better Practice) that shows a pain assessment grounded in best practices that include the use of an interpreter and demonstrates use of a pain assessment tool.

  • Pain Assessment with Interpreter- Better Practice
    Description: The purpose of this video is to illustrate a nursing pain assessment that incorporates best practices with the use of an interpreter. As a reminder, the gold standard, or place to begin, is the patient self-report of pain. Many resources are available when patients are unable to self-report (Fink & Gallagher, 2019). There is a companion video (Pain Assessment with Family Translator- Opportunities for Improvement) demonstrating a similar scenario in which the nurse does not use best practice pain assessment and holistic care for a patient who has non-English language preference.

An Interactive Workshop to Align Course Learning Activities witih AACN Essentials Hospice/Palliative/Supportive Care Sphere
Recorded workshop, by Olga Ehrlich, PhD RN CHPN, from Oakland University, created as a self-paced learning experience for faculty, and the Learning Activity Template. The workshop recording is intended to guide participants through a 3-hour activity which culminates in the development of a CBE learning activity for one of their courses. The Learning Activity Template has categories for faculty to use as they develop their course activity.

Meeting the New Essentials: Collaborative Development and Integration of Primary Palliative Care at Four Universities
This session highlighted the collaborative work of Drs. Mollman, Pravecek, and Garren-Grubbs from South Dakota State University. This team, supported by HRSA funding, developed faculty resources for the integration of primary palliative care content for undergraduate and graduate programs within four South Dakota universities. The presentation included details about a tool they developed to evaluate the outcomes of their project, as well as helpful key takeaways for other faculty who seek to augment palliative care education initiatives within their own programs.

In 2021, ELNEC added a new specific module focused on Perinatal Palliative Care to the ELNEC Pediatric curriculum. Please review the Perinatal module and feel free to utilize in your teachings.

Many faculty have requested a template to facilitate approval of incorporating the ELNEC curricula within their academic nursing programs. You can use this sample proposal for your dean/colleagues/institution/curriculum committee. Access our crosswalk document to see how CARES and G-CARES palliative care competency statements align with AACN Essentials domains, competencies, sub-competencies, and concepts.

International Association for Hospice & Palliative Care: We offer free membership to all students, regardless of the field of study or if they are undergraduate or postgraduate. Our goal is to generate awareness about palliative care with students who will later may become leaders in their fields, and also hope that many of them will eventually join the IAHPC as paying members. The membership is offered for one year and can be renewed annually as long as their student membership status is maintained.
